Notes:

I took two weeks off for moving and a belated engagement celebration. Today I had the day off work and took the opportunity to get back into the swing of things with hiking! We are backpacking in Rocky Mountain twice in the next month, so I needed to make a visit to pick up my back country permit. I decided to add some mileage and check out a trail route I had not completed before— Hollowell Park Trail Head to Bierstadt and Cub Lakes.

I parked at Hollowell Park TH and took the Mill Creek Basin Trail to Bierstadt Lake, then descended to the Cub Lake Trail connector. I added on Cub Lake, then took the park and ride shuttle back to my car at Hollowell Park TH. There is a way to hike this as a connected loop, following the Maraine Park Trail back to Hollowell (12 miles RT).

The first half mile was flat through the meadow, completed exposed to sun. From there you gain elevation steadily along Mill Creek, through a pine forest (about 1200 feet). The trail was completed clear of snow and very quiet for a weekday in the summer. I reached Bierstadt Lake 3.1 miles in, pausing for some photos and then back down to the Cub Lake Trail connector. Check out the elevation profile below— you do climb another ~500 feet to overlook Cub Lake. This section of the trail was unimproved, with several sections obstructed by fallen trees and part of the trail eroded. I did not see anyone else on this section. Once you hit the Cub Lake Trail, you slowly descend to Cub Lake TH. Round trip almost nine miles!

Hike 38: Dream Lake, Rocky Mountain National Park, CO

Date: Sunday, May 26, 2019

Miles: 2.2 miles

Elevation Gain: 427 feet

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Time: 1 hr total

Type: Day hike from Denver (1hr 20min drive)

Notes:

Our last hike during our backpacking trip was to Dream Lake, one of the most classic and iconic RMNP hikes. Now that it is the unofficial start to summer (Memorial Day Weekend), we took the park shuttle from Fern Lake TH to the Bear Lake TH. The shuttle is a great summer option for hikes— you can start at one TH and hike to another without having to backtrack to your car.

Dream Lake is a little bit of a tourist trap— even with winter conditions still in full swing. The 1.1 miles to the lake had quite a bit of snow requiring traction. I doubt the trail will be thawed up for at least another month in places. I would recommend going early to avoid the crowds.

Fun fact— this is where Travis and I are planning on taking our engagement photos this September!

Hike 37: Cub Lake via The Pool, Rocky Mountain National Park, CO

Date: Saturday, May 25, 2019

Miles: 2.2 miles

Elevation Gain: 499 feet

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Time: 1hr total

Type: Day hike from Denver (1hr 20min drive)

Notes:

Our second day hike from our base camp (back country camp site, Old Forest Inn) was to Cub Lake. This is one of my favorite hikes. It was a little over a mile from The Pool, quickly climbing elevation through a previously burned area. Beautiful views of the canyon, mountains and Big Thompson River. This trail was completely clear of snow and had a lot of budding willows.

Hike 36: Fern Lake via The Pool, Rocky Mountain National Park, CO

Date: Saturday, May 25, 2019

Miles: 4.3 miles

Elevation Gain: 1099 feet

Difficulty: Moderate

Time: 2 hr total

Type: Day hike from Denver (1hr 20min drive)

Notes:

Our first day hike from our base camp (The Pool) was to Fern Lake, where Travis and I got engaged two months ago. The trail was snow free up the first mile to Fern Falls, then a slushy second mile up to the lake. I would recommend hiking in the morning when things are still a bit frozen. The afternoon thaw is frustrating even with traction. Fern falls is finally spectacular— if you wanted a shorter hike with elevation commitment, I would recommend it.

Hike 35: Fern Lake Trail to The Pool, Rocky Mountain National Park, CO

Date: Saturday, May 25, 2019

Miles: 4 miles

Elevation Gain: 355 feet

Difficulty: Easy

Time: 45 min total

Type: Day hike from Denver (1hr 20min drive)

Notes:

I’m super behind on posting— still day dreaming of our last backpacking trip!

Last weekend for Memorial Day was our first RMNP backpacking trip of the summer! We hiked a bit past the pool for our site, The Old Forest Inn. This trail follows the Big Thompson River to a major trail junction. The trail is clear of snow and flat. We hiked in and out a total of twice round trip, so I am only including one post (but adding the miles to my official tracking sheet). Great easy hike and beginning backpacking trip.
