Notes:

⚠️ Spring Thaw— Trail is very wet with deep, melting snow. The Wild Basin entrance is still operating with their winter trailhead, about 1.1 miles from the summer trailhead.

I hit my goal of completing 30 hikes by the end of April 🎉! Today we drove to the Wild Basin entrance of Rocky Mountain National Park, a smaller and lesser known trailhead near Allenspark, CO. If you want to explore RMNP without the crowds, I would recommend hiking out of this south eastern portal.

The winter trailhead adds some flat mileage to the Wild Basin TH, where You follow the path straight towards Ouzel Falls (2.7 miles from the summer TH). Our first two miles were flat and clear of snow, following the St. Vrain through scattered forest. After that traction is needed, with snow pack still deep and slowly melting. The trail passes Copeland Falls and Calypso Cascades (other water falls), adding a steep section following the cascades. The last mile is the worst for melting snow, almost impossible to not post hole (bring extra socks). When you approach the bridge and wood sign for Ouzel falls, make sure to break left before the bridge to the overlook. This is one of the largest waterfalls I’ve hiked to in Colorado— highly recommend checking it out in the summer when trail conditions are better.

Notes:

We did this easy hike after work yesterday. The trailhead is on the way to Eldorado Canyon, and costs $5 to park. This is a multi-use path— we had a frustrating time having to constantly stop to let bikers pass. I would recommend doing it off season. This trail is 80% exposed with no shade, so make sure to bring hats and sunscreen. First half mile is wide, but narrows after that. Path is generally flat throughout. Beautiful views of the flatirons.

Hike #28: Wonderland Lake Trail, Boulder, CO

Difficulty: Easy

Time: 30 min total

Notes:

The weather was calling for storms throughout the Front Range, so we chose to spend our Easter Sunday riding bikes along the Boulder Creek Trail and hiking this short loop. Open space is located in North Boulder, limited parking right off Broadway. The trail is a flat and wide multi-use trail, circling the lake framed by the foothills. Great family and quick hike right in town.

Hike #27: Sunny Aspen, Old Ski Run & Lodgepole Loop Trails, Conifer, CO

Date: Saturday, April 20, 2019

Miles: 4.1 miles

Elevation Gain: 873 feet

Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Time: 1 hr 30 min total

Type: Day hike from Denver (30min drive)

Notes:

Meyers Ranch Open Space is a short drive from Denver and has a few braided, easy trails with multiple options for hikes. We chose the three trails listed above, but you can see the other loops illustrated below. The trail is wide and clear, multi use in sections but fairly quiet overall. This was not a very scenic trail, but it’s fairly easy and balances the elevation gain throughout.

Hike #26: Green Mountain via West Ridge, Boulder, CO

Date: Wednesday, April 17 , 2019

Miles: 3.0 miles

Elevation Gain: 682 feet

Difficulty: Moderate

Time: 1 hr 20 min total

Type: Day hike from Denver (35 min drive)

Notes:

We unexpectedly had the day off from school due to security concerns, so we took advantage of our free time and the sunshine to complete a weekday hike. Green Mountain is one of Boulders top five highest peaks, we chose the shortest approach to the summit via the West Ridge Trail. Parking is limited at the trailhead, just a few spots along gravel parallel to the road. The first mile of the trail is mostly flat, following the ridge line for beautiful views. The trail was completely clear with almost no mud. The last half mile contains almost all the elevation gain, featuring several stone steps switch backing to the top of Green Mountain. Would recommend knee braces or poles for this hike, especially on the way back down— the elevation grade is very high.

Also— this hike marks half way to 52!
